Interactive Map Pinpoints Major Bosnian Communities in the US
The New York Times released a new interactive map. This map shows the different ethnic groups and cultures in the United States. It specifically highlights where the largest communities of people from Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) live. The map uses US Census Bureau data from 2019 to 2024.
The data shows several US areas with many Bosnian residents. St. Louis County, Missouri, has the most, with about 11,000 people of BiH origin. Cook County, Illinois, which includes Chicago, comes next with about 9,000 residents. Other areas with significant Bosnian populations include Gwinnett County, Georgia (near Atlanta), Warren County, Kentucky (near Bowling Green), and Oneida County, New York (near Utica). Each of these three counties has roughly 3,000 residents from Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The New York Times created this project to show America's diversity visually. They aimed to offer a new and clear view of the population, avoiding simple clichés. Processing the census data was complex, as some people listed multiple origins.
