Victim Associations Affirm Mladić's Life Sentence Status

Two victim associations have publicly clarified the legal status of convicted Serbian war criminal Ratko Mladić. These groups, the Association of Victims and Witnesses of Genocide and the Movement of Mothers of Srebrenica and Žepa Enclave, responded to repeated calls from Serbian officials, including President Aleksandar Vučić, for Mladić's release or transfer to Serbia for medical treatment.

The associations explained that the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) makes its decisions based on clear legal facts. They stated that Mladić receives proper, continuous medical care in The Hague and the Netherlands, as confirmed by independent medical experts. Mladić is serving a life sentence for genocide, crimes against humanity, and violations of the laws of war.

Rules for early release after serving two-thirds of a sentence do not apply to life sentences. Humanitarian release is only considered if the current facility cannot provide adequate treatment, which is not the case for Mladić. The IRMCT operates strictly within international law and expert assessments, not political initiatives. Murat Tahirović and Munira Subašić, presidents of the two associations, suggested that Aleksandar Vučić does not understand Mladić's judicial status.
