Birmingham Ceremony Remembers Prijedor Victims

A white flag was raised at the Bosnian House in Birmingham this weekend. This honored victims from Prijedor and marked White Armband Day. On May 31, 1992, non-Serb people in Prijedor were forced to mark their homes with white flags or wear white armbands. This became a symbol of ethnic cleansing during the Bosnian War. The community remembers 102 children and many other civilians who died. Records show 3,176 civilians were killed or are still missing. Over 30,000 Bosniaks and Croats were held in camps like Omarska, Keraterm, and Trnopolje. The Bosnian-Herzegovinian community in the UK will also hold remembrance events in Coventry and Birmingham. The white armband still warns against hatred and promises victims will not be forgotten.
