Canadian Mayors Support Srebrenica Remembrance and Bosnian-Herzegovinian Ties

A delegation from the Institute for Research of Genocide Canada (IRGC) and the Bosnian-Herzegovinian community met with Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe and Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath. This was part of an effort to promote Bosnia and Herzegovina and remembrance of the Srebrenica genocide.
The delegation thanked the mayors for their continuous support. This includes yearly proclamations of July 11 as the Srebrenica Genocide Day of Remembrance and recognition of Bosnian-Herzegovinian national holidays.
New strategic activities were proposed. These involve educating Canadians about the Srebrenica genocide, erecting memorials, and naming streets "Srebrenica" in Ottawa and Hamilton. These plans align with the 2024 UN resolution, co-sponsored by Canada, establishing July 11 as an international remembrance day.
Mayors accepted the proposals and agreed to work on them, including a plan to twin Sarajevo with Ottawa and Hamilton. The delegation presented plaques to the mayors as thanks.
