Bosnian Tower Honors Nation's Past and European Future in Brussels
Bosnia and Herzegovina is moving towards joining the European Union. On May 22nd, the day BiH joined the United Nations, a special event took place in Brussels. A large "Bosnian Tower" was erected in Schuman Square, in front of key EU institutions.
The tower stands over 10 meters tall, showcasing historical symbols of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Brussels-based "For Bosnia" organization created this installation. Adem Pobrić, the group's leader, has completed similar projects before. Last July, he organized a display marking the Srebrenica genocide anniversary.
The "Bosnian Tower" will remain in Schuman Square until May 26, 2026. Pobrić explained its purpose: to remind Europe and the world about BiH's historical journey. It highlights how BiH became a UN member and is now approaching EU membership. The tower features the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina's flag with lilies, under which BiH joined the UN in 1992. It also displays the current official BiH flag and the European Union flag, symbolizing BiH's European aspirations.
Pobrić emphasized the tower's educational role. American students from the University of South Carolina visited for a history lesson. The tower notably includes a large Srebrenica Flower. Pobrić hopes the tower will attract attention. He believes it shows BiH's significance to Europe and the world, and the importance of EU membership for BiH.
Diplomatic representatives from BiH in Brussels attended the tower's unveiling. Erol Avdović, BiH's Ambassador to Belgium and Luxembourg, spoke. He thanked Pobrić and underscored the historical importance of May 22, 1992. On that day, the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and Slovenia gained full UN membership.
Ambassador Avdović stated that the flag with lilies was vital. Many Bosnian patriots defended the country under this flag during the war. He suggested that without it, today's official state flag might not exist. He confirmed BiH continues its European path despite challenges.
He urged the EU to remember BiH's wartime experiences, including the Srebrenica genocide. This is relevant given the ongoing war in Ukraine. Avdović believes stronger EU partnership and mentorship can accelerate BiH's entry into the European family. The "Bosnian Tower" in the EU's center links BiH's international recognition, European future, and historical memory.
