Commemoration in Stupni Do Marks 33rd Anniversary of Wartime Massacre
The 33rd anniversary of the war crime against Bosniak civilians was commemorated in the village of Stupni Do near Vares. On October 23, 1993, members of the Croatian Defence Council killed 38 Bosniak civilians in the village. Attendees paid tribute to the victims, visited local cemeteries, and joined a memorial march.
Meho Sljivo addressed the gathering on behalf of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He stated that remembering the crime is a duty to the victims and their families. He warned that the victims must never be forgotten or made anonymous. Ramiz Zubaca, the chief local imam, explained that victims could not be buried in Stupni Do immediately after the attack. Families had to bury their loved ones in surrounding villages.
Around 150 people took part in the annual Path of Salvation peace walk. The route followed the mountain path that villagers used to flee the attack in 1993 before UNPROFOR peacekeepers evacuated them. Survivors walked alongside younger generations to share their experiences.
Zenica-Doboj Canton Prime Minister Nezir Pivic also attended the ceremony. He emphasized the importance of preserving the truth at a time when some still glorify war criminals and deny crimes. Pivic stressed that future generations must learn the facts to prevent further suffering for victim families.
