BHRT Condemns Judicial Pressure Amid RTRS Dispute

Radiotelevizija Bosne i Hercegovine (BHRT) strongly condemns all political, institutional, and public pressure on judges and courts in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This applies especially to recent pressures regarding a court case between BHRT and Radio-televizija Republike Srpske (RTRS). BHRT finds attempts to challenge court decisions politically, publicly discredit judges, and demand rulings under political influence unacceptable. Only courts should decide such matters.

The issue of RTRS's obligations for RTV tax revenues to BHRT is a legal process. No political body should pressure judges to sway court outcomes, as observed recently in Republika Srpska. It is wrong to question court decisions based on "public interest" or one broadcaster's financial state. This cannot justify ignoring final court rulings or applying laws selectively.

BHRT urges the High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council of Bosnia and Herzegovina (VSTV BiH), the EU Delegation to Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the Office of the High Representative (OHR) to immediately respond publicly to these pressures. They must protect judicial independence.

BHRT expects VSTV BiH to investigate all media pressures and ensure judges are free from political influence or intimidation. The EU Delegation should confirm that an independent judiciary is key for rule of law and BiH's EU journey. OHR should address political influence on the judiciary.

BHRT will not let its legal rights become a political issue. While respecting courts, using political power to intimidate judges threatens the rule of law. This practice must not be accepted in Bosnia and Herzegovina. BHRT calls on institutions to protect judicial independence and ensure judges decide based on law, without fear. BHRT will continue to advocate for the rule of law and inform the public.
