Canada Remembers Srebrenica Genocide, Calls for Justice

Global Affairs Canada issued a statement on July 11, 2026. Canada honored the Srebrenica genocide victims. In July 1995, Bosnian Serb forces killed over 8,000 Bosniaks and displaced 20,000 in Srebrenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Canada recognized the deep impact on survivors.

This was the third International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the Srebrenica Genocide. The UN General Assembly established it in May 2024, with Canada as a co-sponsor. Canada stressed the importance of remembering and learning from such crimes.

Canada supports Bosnia and Herzegovina by helping implement the 1995 Dayton Peace Agreement. It upholds BiH's sovereignty and multi-ethnic character. Regional peace relies on stability in BiH. Canada urged accountability for perpetrators to achieve justice and lasting peace.
