Srebrenica Bans Public Gatherings Amid Mladić Controversy

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Republika Srpska (MUP RS) banned all public gatherings planned for today in Srebrenica. This action came after an announcement on social media for a rally supporting Ratko Mladić, a convicted war criminal. Victims' associations had planned a peaceful counter-protest in response. The MUP RS ban covered both events.

Authorities stated the ban was purely for security, to prevent public disorder. Srebrenica is experiencing an increased police presence, but the city is calm with no gatherings. Victims' associations, such as "Movement Mothers of the Srebrenica and Žepa Enclaves," canceled their counter-protest. They did so after local officials secured guarantees that the provocative Mladić support gathering would not be allowed.

Ratko Mladić, a former commander of the Army of Republika Srpska, recently passed away. He was serving a life sentence from The Hague's International Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals. Mladić was convicted for genocide in Srebrenica, alongside persecution, murder, and grave violations of war laws, including the siege of Sarajevo. His death has prompted regional reactions, but legal experts emphasize it does not alter historical facts or court verdicts.
