Srebrenica Memorial Director Links Police Action to Past Genocide Tactics

Over 20 current and former staff members of the Srebrenica Memorial Center received summons for police questioning. Director Emir Suljagić responded, linking these events to the misuse of legal systems during the 1995 Srebrenica genocide.

Suljagić recounted his time in Potočari in July 1995. He saw Bosnian Serb forces selecting men and boys, while claiming legal justification. He compared this to present-day Bosnian Serb officials, Željka Cvijanović and Srđan Amidžić, who claim the recent police actions against the Memorial Center are legal.

He also cited Radovan Karadžić's 1995 instruction to "put everything through papers." This made forced population transfers appear lawful. Suljagić emphasized that a perversion of law was central to the plan to eliminate Bosniaks. For example, mass graves were termed "sanitation," and massacres "combat operations."

However, Suljagić pointed out a vital difference today. The crimes are now well-documented, investigated, and widely known. He concluded by stating, "Wherever you come, we have already been," and that these efforts would fail. He stressed that their freedom is taken seriously.
