UK Remembers Srebrenica Genocide

The United Kingdom will mark its National Srebrenica Genocide Memorial Day in 2026. Over 1,000 commemorative events are planned across the country. A key national ceremony will take place in London at Church House Westminster on July 13, 2026.
Bosnia and Herzegovina leaders Denis Bećirović and Željko Komšić will attend. They will join British Minister for Europe Stephen Doughty and London Mayor Sadiq Khan. Around 700 other diplomats, politicians, survivors, and community leaders will also be present.
The Srebrenica genocide was the worst act of mass killing in Europe since World War II. Thousands of Bosniak men and boys were murdered because of who they were.
Each year, Remembering Srebrenica UK chooses a theme. This theme highlights an aspect of the genocide that people must remember. It also sends a strong message to communities across the UK. The theme for 2026 is "We Are Here."
This theme represents the survivors of the genocide. Despite huge losses, they are here today. They show dignity, courage, and strength. Their presence proves that genocide does not have the final say. In the UK, the "We Are Here" message is visible through the successful Bosnian-Herzegovinian community. These people rebuilt their lives after persecution and trauma.
However, "We Are Here" is a message for everyone. It reminds us of our shared duty. When we listen, learn, and fight against hatred, we also say: "We Are Here."
Dr. Waqar Azmi OBE, who chairs Remembering Srebrenica UK, said the theme tells perpetrators that they failed. Survivors and their children are here. He added that Britain stands together in remembering Srebrenica. He stressed that remembrance means actively fighting against hatred and division. This is important as many communities worry about rising Islamophobia and racism.
Lord Lemos, the British Minister for Faith and Communities, said the Srebrenica genocide must never be forgotten. It warns us about what hatred can do. He praised the courage of survivors who rebuilt their lives. They work to ensure future generations understand the dangers of hatred. Lord Lemos also recognized the Bosnians who found refuge in the UK. They found support and built new lives, becoming successful and contributing to their communities, especially in the West Midlands.
Remembering Srebrenica UK is a national charity. It gets funding from the UK government. It organizes remembrance and education activities about the Srebrenica genocide across the UK. Many events will happen during this year's Remembrance Week.
