Weekend Shootings in Chicago Spark Trump's Demand for Intervention

Chicago police reported at least seven people killed and 38 injured in weekend shootings. This surge in violence led former U.S. President Donald Trump to renew his call for military intervention in the city. On his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump criticized Illinois Governor J. B. Pritzker for not asking for federal help. Trump claimed he could make Chicago a safe city in just one month.
Governor Pritzker's office has not yet responded to Trump's comments. Pritzker has previously rejected Trump's proposals for military assistance. Trump has, however, ordered National Guard deployments to other cities led by Democrats to combat crime.
Chicago police data indicates a slight increase in shootings compared to the first half of last year. However, overall violent crime rates in the city have decreased in recent years, aligning with national trends. Authorities reported approximately twenty separate shooting incidents since Friday afternoon. Among the victims were a 21-year-old, an 18-year-old, and a 50-year-old man. In one incident, 12 people were shot on a Chicago street from an SUV.
