Canada Expresses Concern Over Srebrenica Memorial Center Pressures

The Institute for Research of Genocide Canada (IGK) received a reply from the Canadian Prime Minister's office. This response concerned protecting people linked to the Srebrenica Memorial Center.

The Bosnian-Herzegovinian community in Canada and IGK wrote to officials. They were worried about police questioning Srebrenica Memorial Center staff. They urged Canada to use its influence to protect the center's integrity.

The Prime Minister's office took these concerns seriously. It sent the letter to Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand for review and action.

Mayors of several Canadian cities, including Ottawa, Toronto, and Hamilton, also backed related initiatives. These included naming streets "Srebrenica," building monuments, and teaching about the genocide in schools.

Canada has long recognized the Srebrenica genocide. It declared July 11 Canadian Srebrenica Remembrance Day in 2010. Canada also co-sponsored a UN General Assembly resolution on Srebrenica.
